The title “Doctor of the Church” is presented by the Pope in recognition of the outstanding contribution a person has made to the understanding and interpretation of the sacred Scriptures and the development of Christian doctrine. Doctor is a borrowed Latin word which means “teacher”. Doctors of the church serve as our teachers. The saints acknowledged as doctors have articulated the Church’s teachings through writing and preaching so clear and powerful that they became a benchmark, or guide to others. Until 1970, no woman had been named as a doctor of the church. However, since then, four additions to the list have been women. The most recent woman declared as a Doctor of the Church was Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179). She was declared by Pope Benedict in October, 2012. Pope saint Leo the Great is one of the few popes given the title “the Great”. During the time when the Western Empire in Rome was being disintegrated, and all moral values were threatened by the barbarian invasions, Pope Leo I stood out as a resolute champion of faith and courageous leader. Pope  In 452, he met Attila the Hun, known as “The Scourge of God,” and peacefully succeeded in saving Rome from being sacked. His courage lifted the prestige of the Holy See mightily, and earned for him the title of “The Great.” The church honored Leo further, with the title Doctor because he is a profound model of Christian doctrine. In Soul Surfer, after her tragedy, Bethany asks her counselor, “Is this God’s plan for me?” There are two different types of evil: natural evil, and human evil. The shark attack was a natural evil act. God does not cause evil, however, he does allow evil to happen so good can come from it. Before the tragedy, Bethany’s family was united, during the tragedy they were faced with a challenge. Then, after the tragedy they became reunited and stronger than before. After her tragedy, Bethany was able to view the world with a brand new perspective. The church teaching is that “faith gives us the certainty that God would not permit an evil if he did not cause a good to come from that very evil, by ways that we shall fully know only in eternal life.” There is always good that comes from an evil act. Evil regarding to climate change today is another example of natural evil. Hurricanes, tornadoes, and tsunamis can be very disastrous and ruin the lives of people. The effects of harsh weather can be tragic but there is certain good that comes from it. People are able to rebuild homes and make a new start. Others around the world send food, money and other donations to help the victims of the storm. Through charity and faith the victims are able to see the world with a new perspective and be thankful for all that they have. In Soul Surfer, Bethany helps victims of a tsunami. She is able to transition from being selfish to selfless which was an important moment in her personal development. By helping others, she becomes more caring and charitable. She is able to strengthen the faith of others through her actions. The theological virtues are the most important virtues because they deal with our relationship with God and binds us to him. “A virtue is an habitual and firm disposition to do the good”. There are three theological virtues: faith, hope, and charity. These virtues are the foundation of Christian moral activity. The goal of living a virtuous life is to become more like God. In”Soul Surfer”, Bethany was very unvirtuous in the beginning of the film. However after her tragedy Bethany’s perspective changed and she realized that people needed her help. In doing good for others it gave her an awareness for herself to grow. Bethany developed a habit of doing good by going to church, praying, joining a youth group, collecting food and going on mission trips. She also treats her family and friends well. Her new habits habits soon became a part of who she is, which is the whole meaning of living a virtuous life. The Nicene Constantinople Creed, presents our profession of faith. Creed comes from the Latin word credo which means “I believe.” It is a summarization of the faith we profess and principle truths of God given to us by the early church and passed on to every generation. The name came about in Nicaea, 325, the Great councils of the church meet and formulated the first version of the Nicene creed. The creed was then clarified in Constantinople, 381. The full title soon became known as the Nicene Constantinople Creed. As we profess and reaffirm the common faith that is the foundation of Christianity, we today share in the same truths as did the earliest Christians. A quote from the Nicene Creed is “Begotten, not made Consubstantial with the Father”. Jesus is the only begotten Son of God, meaning that he is fully divine and eternal. Consubstantial with the father describes the divine persons of the trinity. God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Ghost are “of one substance” in that the Son is “begotten” “before all ages” or “eternally” of the Father’s own being, from which the Spirit also eternally “proceeds.” When we profess the creed, it is important to understand what you are reciting. God’s love for us is so strong in that while we were sinners, he died for us. Some saints have sacrificed their lives in defense of this creed. The creed is not just a proclamation, it is a prayer that saints made in faith and and where sinners find their hope. More importantly, it is a prayer where God shows his love. When saying the Creed, we need to be more than just a robot reciting words. We need to have passion and say the Creed with all our heart. Pray, love and live the creed
